In the course of its rich 50-year history, Grayson College has been a mainstay in the area’s vibrant community. Grayson College is a public community college serving Grayson and a portion of Fannin County that enrolls approximately 4,500 credit students each fall semester. Credit options include everything from innovative dual credit partnerships with local school districts that help to fill the needs of our local workforce to transfer programs that enable students to earn a bachelor’s degree. In addition to credit programs, the college offers a wide variety of non-credit classes ranging from customized business training and workforce solutions to community enrichment courses that include opportunities for seniors as well as summer camps for kids. Learning labs present unique opportunities for area residents to visit the campus. Cosmetology students offer a variety of affordable hair and nail treatments at their salon, which is open to the public. Appointments are available during most days and evenings while classes are in session. Culinary Arts students operate a student-run restaurant— Six Ninety One. Seating for lunch is available one or two days each week during the long semesters and reservations are recommended. For about $10, patrons can experience fine dining while helping students hone their skills. Among traditional English and science courses, Grayson also offers some very unique options. The college’s viticulture and enology program (grape growing and wine making) is one of the few degreed programs of its kind in the country, and the first in a Texas community college. The program was introduced in 1974, but its foundation emerged in 1876 when Thomas Volney Munson arrived in Grayson County. His research is credited with saving the French wine industry, and the college serves as a repository for his work. The program is slated to add a distilling option by 2018. Graduates of the college often stay in our local community, serving as nurses, fire fighters, police officers, teachers and more. Graduates who leave the area find success as well, and alumni include successful actors, business leaders and World Series champions. From concerts and theatre performances to baseball and softball games, the college adds to the mix that brings vitality to our community. Come see what Grayson College has to offer.
