Michael Gross, R.N., a UF Health Shands nurse, looks out at the construction site of the UF Health Heart & Vascular and Neuromedicine Hospitals. He is one of hundreds of staff members who will transition to the new space in late 2017. In January 2015, UF Health leaders, faculty, staff and community members gathered for the groundbreaking ceremony of the heart and neuro hospitals. In December 2017, our shared vision will become a reality as the hospitals open to patients and their families. The $415 million specialty hospitals will provide world-class space in which our providers can deliver concentrated care to meet the growing demand for UF Health’s neurologic, neurosurgical, heart and vascular services for patients with complex health conditions. The 10,881-square-foot E.R. features 14 exam spaces and two rooms dedicated to rapid triaging and patient examinations. The full-service E.R. is open 24/7, is staffed by physicians board-certified in emergency medicine and can provide the same level of emergency care as a hospital-based E.R. If patients need further care or admission to the hospital, the transition of care to the UF Health Shands E.R. on the main hospital campus will be seamless. UF Health Children’s Surgical Center Expands to Meet Community Needs The new UF Health Children’s Surgical Center opened its doors in April 2016 to pediatric patients and their families. Patients will benefit from an expanded facility, which will accommodate the growing need for specialized care for children. The new 17,500-square-foot building is located on Hull Road off Southwest 34th Street. It is connected to the UF Health Florida Surgical Center and has its own family-friendly entrance and waiting area.
